OpenAI Introduces Model Selection for Custom GPTs

OpenAI has rolled out a new update to its custom GPT feature, allowing for the selection of multiple models. A new feature has been announced that enables the use of models other than GPT-4o in custom GPTs. A default model setting has also been implemented for GPTs.
OpenAI has expanded model selection in custom GPTs. Users are no longer limited to GPT-4o and can now choose different models.
OpenAI’s custom GPT feature, launched at the end of 2023, allows users to create personalized chatbots tailored to their needs. It’s possible to add pre-defined instructions, information, and various tasks to these bots.
Default Model Setting Activated for GPTs

With the new update, not only GPT-4o but also different models like GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1-mini, o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high can now be used in custom GPTs. As model options increase, OpenAI has also added a default setting called “recommended model” to simplify the user experience. This setting ensures that a custom GPT automatically starts with a default model every time it’s opened. If this model isn’t available to the user, the system will use a similar one.
However, some restrictions apply. If your custom GPT has “action” features such as API calls, web Browse, or code execution, model selection is currently limited. Additionally, these features are presently only available to Pro, Plus, and Team users. Enterprise and educational plan users will need to wait a bit longer. The freedom of model selection makes custom GPTs more flexible, but only time will tell how widely this change will be adopted.
